Day 349: Just Down the Hall

3/10 of 10 Days of Selfies

I’ve been wanting to try second curtain flash sync for a while now. This is a technique in which you set your external flash to pop when your camera shutter closes as opposed to when it opens (First Curtain Sync). Coupled with a long exposure, second curtain flash sync allows you to capture motion in lower light situations and still have a sharp focal point (whatever the flash is aimed at when it pops). Most of the light in this shot is ambient, which the slow shutter speed enabled the camera to pick up. My face and final position are comparatively sharper than the “movement” around me, as the flash popped when I turned. My set-up wasn’t necessarily ideal for playing with second curtain. I think ideally, I should have been shooting a) something light on a dark background and b) something moving across the frame instead of away from the frame. It was fun to play with, though, and I’ll definitely be exploring it more.
