Day 89: Red
This is shot number 7 in my Stage-Free Shooting challenge. I decided to play with bokeh today. This is shot of a large bush of red Christmas lights.
1/5 sec @ f/1.8, 50mm, ISO 100
How I did it: I made a snowflake filter for the front of my lens with a craft punch. I just scotch taped the filter to the sides of the lens, set my lens aperture to its max (1.8) and set it to its closest focal length, making the lights, which were further away, very out of focus. The size of the punch was too big, really. You can see this as the edges of the bursts are sometimes cut off. I kind of liked this result thinking it made them look more three dimensional…sort of like blooming flowers. A smaller punch (i.e., smaller shape cut out) would have given me “complete” bursts. A tripod might have also given me crisper edges.
